Journalists honoured for coverage of violence against women

Two regional journalists have been honoured for their work on highlighting the issue of violence against women.

Judith Duffy, of Glasgow’s Sunday Herald, and freelancer Gina Davidson, who writes for the Edinburgh Evening News, both received accolades at the 2015 Write to End Violence Against Women Awards.

Judith won the Best Article – News category for a piece on street harassment, while Gina received the Gender Equality Award for her work.

A ‘Wooden Spoon’ award was given collectively to the subject of ‘Headlines’ across the press industry, which the judges deemed to be “selling short” the issue.

Said Gina: “Winning awards is always a great thing, but the Write to End Violence Against Women awards are about more than giving journalists a pat on the back for being able to write about gender issues without getting it wrong – which seems to be all too easily done when you hear about the potential winners of the Wooden Spoon.

“These awards are a constant reminder that journalists should challenge themselves when writing about women – be they Scotland’s First Minister or a mum who has escaped from domestic violence.

“We all know the media can set cultural norms, so if we are vigilant in tackling sexism in our writing and correcting it in others, then we can help make the norm that women are respected for their talents and intelligence.”
