Regional daily launches Christmas toy appeal

A Christmas toy appeal has been launched by a regional daily with the aim of bringing festive cheer to the neediest children on its patch.

The Nottingham Post has launched the appeal part of its Good Deed Notts campaign, an ongoing drive urging readers to commit acts of kindness over the course of 12 months.

The Post is appealing for donations of toys, puzzles and books for children living in poverty, youngsters who have lost their families and young people living on the streets.

Presents collected will be given out by Father Christmas during parties organised by the Notts Children’s Bereavement Centre and NG11 Food Bank.

They will also go to families in crisis through Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid, Nottingham Women’s Centre and The Haven Centre, as well as teenagers on the streets via Broxtowe Youth Homelessness.

The appeal was launched on yesterday’s front page, pictured below.

Editor Mike Sassi said: “Christmas is a joyous and family occasion and it’s heartbreaking to think that some children will not get a present.

“We hope to change this and give those in need something that will brighten their day and show them that someone out there really does care.”

The campaign has won the backing of boxer Carl Froch.

He said: “A lot of children get spoilt at Christmas but lots are also forgot about so it’s nice to give a bit back and put a smile on their faces.”

“I have my own kids now and it’d be horrible to think they wouldn’t get anything at such a happy time – this is a great campaign.”

It would be news if they didn’t run a Christmas toy appeal…
