Publisher reveals online election coverage plans

A regional publisher has unveiled its initial proposals for online coverage of the run up to the General Election.

Trinity Mirror plans to launch a “find my seat” service to aid readers in identifying their constituency by typing in their postcode.

The service will then allow them to browse different statistics specific to that constituency – including data on poverty, demographics and immigration.

Sarah Lester, executive editor at the Manchester Evening News, made the announcement at the News Rewired conference held last week.

She told delegates: “It will give a real and full picture of what really is the truth of those seats.”

Sarah announced TM’s regional titles would host online chats between regional newspaper editors and readers via the Google Hangout service.

Proposals for “digital hustings” and question and answer sessions on Facebook were also mentioned.

She added: “Sometimes people are happier to talk [on Facebook] than through live blogs.”

Trinity Mirror has declined to comment further on the matter, but it is understood more specific details will be announced in due course ahead of the election in May.

Now, to continue the trend, that is “exciting.” I am sure the public, already sick of political posturing, will lap that up. It is a great space filler.
