Publisher launches mentoring scheme for ‘community journalists’

A mentoring programme which will see 60 young “community journalists” write for regional newspapers has been launched by Trinity Mirror.

The partnership between the company and the Media Trust will see writers aged 16 to 24 sourcing and producing stories on a specially-created web platform.

One or more mentors have been assigned to those involved to offer training in critical thinking, story structure, writing news stories, writing to deadlines and using video and photography.

Participating newsrooms include The Chronicle and The Journal in Newcastle, the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, Manchester Evening News, Birmingham Mail, South Wales Echo, Liverpool Echo and Teesside Gazette.

The content produced by those taking part in the project is uploaded to a specially-created WordPress platform, with the best being published on the titles’ websites – the first of which appeared on the WalesOnline site on Thursday, pictured above.

Neil Benson, Trinity Mirror’s editorial director of regionals, was approached by the Media Trust to establish the project.

He said: “We’re delighted to be able to give these young people a taste of life in the newsroom, which otherwise might not be available to them.

“They are a really impressive group and the work they have produced so far has been excellent.”

The project is scheduled to run until June.
