Press regulator announces two new appointments

The Independent Press Standards Organisation has announced two new appointments.

Mehmuda Mian has been appointed to the IPSO board with immediate effect, while Niall Duffy has been hired as its first director of external affairs.

Former solicitor Mehmuda has previously served as a trustee on the BBC Trust and a commissioner on the Independent Police Complaints Committee.

Niall has spent his career in communications, working for the RSPCA, Nestle and most recently the airline Flybe.

He said: ““IPSO has the potential to change completely the way in which the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK is regulated and I’m really pleased to be appointed.

“Having seen the progress Sir Alan and Matt have already made, I am excited at the prospect of being a part of an organisation that strives not only to uphold standards of journalism but also provides support and redress for individuals seeking to complain about breaches of the Editors’ Code.”

Mehmuda added: “A free and responsible press is fundamental. I am very pleased to have been appointed to bring my skills and experience to IPSO and to playing a part in ensuring that members of the public that feel mistreated by the press have somewhere to come to seek resolution.”
