Photographer’s iconic stripper picture featured on Canadian TV

An iconic image of Britain’s first male stripper, captured by a regional press photographer, has featured on a Canadian reality television series.

Graham Gough, formerly of the Express & Star, Wolverhampton, captured the shot of Andy Wade revealing all during a show at a pub in Dudley in 1975.

The famous image was the basis for “Ladies Night”, one of the best known paintings by artist Beryl Cook.

Now it has appeared on reality show Les Dieux de la Scene, a series focusing on a group of male strippers in Canada.

It first attracted worldwide attention after being reproduced in The Sun, German tabloid Bild and then went on to win the Midland News Picture of the Year Award for 1975.

Graham said the picture had developed a “life of its own over the years”.

He added: “In those days you did not know exactly what kind of shot you had in the can until you got back to the darkroom and developed the film.

“At the time I knew it was a good picture but never imagined for a moment the life it would take on and I’m pleased people are still interested in the photograph after all this time.”

The picture is featured in Graham’s book, ‘The Black Country Album: 50 Years of Events, People & Places’ published by History Press, which is available at bookshops and on Amazon.
