A former television presenter who began his journalism career at a regional daily has died aged 65.

Tributes have been paid to Steve Taylor, who worked at the South Wales Argus before going on to front Wales at Six news and other programmes, including Soccer Sunday, on HTV.

He began his career at the Argus, based in his hometown of Newport, as a teenager in the late 1960s before moving to BBC Radio Wales.

In 1992 he made the switch to television, where he remained until his retirement in 2006.

Phil Henfrey, head of news and programmes at ITV Cymru Wales, described Steve, pictured above, as “one of the greats of Welsh news broadcasting.”

He added: “He will be sadly missed by listeners, viewers and his former colleagues in Wales.

“He was an accomplished and fearless journalist with a distinctive style crafted over many decades in print, radio and television journalism.

“As a former sports and news presenter and producer on ITV Wales Tonight, he had rightly earned the respect and appreciation of television audiences across Wales for his warmth, his humour and his integrity.”

Steve is survived by his wife and two children.
