The industry’s biggest annual journalism training conference will be held in Birmingham this year, it has been announced.

The National Council for the Training of Journalists’ Journalism Skills Conference will be hosted by the BBC in Birmingham on 26 and 27 November.

The two-day event will take place at BBC centre The Mailbox, pictured left, and delegates will stay at the Malmaison hotel, while the awards dinner will be held at the Library of Birmingham.

Sessions at the conference will include a debate about the future structure of the Diploma in Journalism, along with digital developments and diversity issues.

The Mailbox has been described by BBC director general Tony Hall as “the place to be if you’re interested in new skills and digital innovation” and the BBC’s journalism apprentice schemes, community outreach teams and skills development are all based there.

David Jennings, head of regional and local programmes for BBC West Midlands, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting the Journalism Skills seminars at the headquarters of BBC Birmingham.

“With the recent move here of the BBC Academy, Birmingham is the hub for all the training we offer – both for the BBC and the wider industry.

“I am sure this will be a great opportunity to forge new links and explore key issues as the core skills of journalism continue to evolve.”

The conference will also host the NCTJ Awards for Excellence, which celebrate the best student and trainee journalists, and will take place on the evening of 26 November at the gala dinner.
