Internet bidding war prompts reprint of Richard III special

Internet bidding wars have seen memorabilia hunters offer more than £20 for a regional daily’s special supplement after it sold out of its initial print run.

The Leicester Mercury has printed thousands of extra copies of the supplement, released to mark the reinterment of King Richard III in the city last week owing to extra demand.

Several copies of the limited edition release, pictured below, went up for sale on auction website eBay, with sellers slapping price tags of up to £25 on the souvenir.

Copies of Monday’s edition of the Mercury, which splashed on a procession of the king’s remains through the streets of Leicestershire, are also being auctioned off on the site.

The bones of the king, who died at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, were discovered by scientists from the University of Leicester under a car park in the city in 2012.

The Mercury currently has a section on its website dedicated to its coverage of Richard III, with an interactive timeline charting all the events that have taken place since the discovery.

Commenting on the success of the supplement, circulation administrator Teresa Murrin said: “The vendors have all sold out and there are hardly any left in the shops.

“We’ve printed a few extra thousand so they’ll be available from now up until they’re sold out.”
