Further promotion announced at Newsquest daily

A further internal promotion has been announced at the Bournemouth Echo after its editor, Toby Granville, was appointed to a group-wide development role.

Deputy editor Andy Martin had already been promoted to acting editor to cover for Toby during his 12-month secondment to the new post.

Now Neil Meldrum has been appointed acting deputy editor, having previously served as assistant editor and head of sport at the title.

Neil will continue to combine the head of sport role with that of acting deputy editor.

Other recent job moves in the regional press include:

  • Shropshire Star chief reporter Jennifer Meierhans has left the title. Jennifer is joining Big Centre TV which has won the franchise to provide local Tv services in Birmingham.
  • The Press Association has appointed Jennifer Cockerell as health correspondent. She has previously served as regional reporter and general news reporter at the agency and is covering the health beat in the absence of health correspondents Ella Pickover and Jane Kirby, who are both on maternity leave.
  • The Dover Express has appointed Phil Hayes as news editor. He was previously chief reporter.
  • Oliver Cross left the Yorkshire Post last week after 15 years as a columnist with the daily. He will continue to blog at www.oliveracross.com.
  • Libby McBride has been appointed reporter at the Brentwood Gazette.

“Neil will continue to combine the head of sport role with that of acting deputy editor.”
Echoes that of similar roles on other papers. Downgrading of sport, and many papers now have no sports editor on site. Mystifies me because well written and presented sport is a good seller (not the UGC crap now being offered for consumption).
