Former daily journalist’s book recalls England’s finest hour

England’s 1966 World Cup win forms the subject matter for a new book written by a former regional daily journalist.

Chris Arnot has penned The Day We Won The Cup, which recalls different football supporters’ memories about the day of the final against West Germany.

The idea came about when former Coventry Telegraph journalist Chris was reminiscing about what he was doing about what he was doing on the historic day when Geoff Hurst’s hat-trick sealed a 4-2 victory.

Stories collated in the book include that of former Telegraph editor Geoff Elliott, who bought a ticket which covered all of the build-up games and the final for just £24 – but only went to the final itself.

Recalling his own memory of the day, Chris told his former newspaper: “I was 17 and footloose with daft ideas. I was out on the open road with a friend and we were sleeping rough.

“One morning we woke up in a field outside Bath and we were wondering where we were going to watch the match.

“I was trying to find an aunty of mine in Wiltshire and we hitchhiked there. It was our lucky day as when we finally got there we also made the most of a hot bath and a good, long sleep.”

The Day We Won the Cup – England then and now is available from Waterstones in Coventry, Amazon and Earlsdon post office in the city for £9.95.
