Former daily editor in Brussels to Paris cycle challenge

RobLawson

A former daily editor is embarking on a cycle challenge from Brussels to Paris to raise funds for a football foundation.

Former Sunderland Echo editor Rob Lawson will take on the 320-mile Ride of Remembrance to raise money for the Foundation of Light, which was set up by Sunderland Football Club to run programmes for young people.

The event has been set up to commemorate the 70th anniversary of World War Two and the challenge, which runs from 30 June to 5 July, takes in some of the towns and landmarks associated with the war.

Rob worked as editor of the Sunderland title for 10 years and was also editorial director of sister titles in Northeast Press Ltd until 2012, when he resigned from the title on the same day that it was announced that the company’s print plant in Sunderland was closing.

He has since joined Callaghan Marketing as an associate director.

Tweeting about his cycle challenge on Tuesday, Rob wrote: “Just about to set off for Foundation of Light Ride of Remembrance … but you still have time to sponsor me. Wish us luck!!!!”

He aims to raise £700 for the Foundation of Light with the cycle ride and has collected almost £500 of sponsorship so far.

The cycle challenge takes in Huy, La Roche en Ardenne, Durbuy, Sedan, Novion-Porcien, and Soissons and ends under the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Rob can be sponsored on his JustGiving page.

Former ncjMedia journalist Robert Weatherall is also taking part in what’s proving to be a real slog in the heat and total climbs of over 15,000 feet. Well done to them all.
