Football fans wind up rivals with full page advert

Football fans took out a full page advert in a Sunday newspaper to claim a rival club no longer exists.

Supporters of Celtic FC took out the ad in the Glasgow-based Sunday Herald, pictured below, ahead of next Sunday’s Scottish League Cup semi-final against Rangers.

The two clubs, known as the Old Firm, have historically vied to be Scotland’s top team, but Rangers went into liquidation in 2012 after encountering financial problems.

Rangers have since reformed, with supporters of the club insisting the new entity is a continuation of the former side.

The statement in the advert reads: “Many Celtic supporters, from all sections of our support, feel it necessary to make our position with regard to the current ‘Rangers’ club prior to this match.

“Celtic supporters believe there is no track record of matches between Celtic and our semi-final opponents and that the game on 1 February is in fact the first meeting between Celtic and the new Rangers club, which was established in 2012.”

The upcoming encounter will be the first time the pair have met since the new club was formed.

In a follow-up piece with its sister title The Herald, former Rangers players hit out at the advert.

Alex Rae, who won the league with the club in 2006, said: “Listen, that’s just provoking things. If that’s what they get their kicks from on the day, maybe it will take away from their performance. Good luck to them.

“Rangers, over the years, have tried to conduct themselves in the right manner, with a bit of dignity, so it’s not important what they do. What is important is how we conduct ourselves.”

Former manager Alex McLeish added: “For me, Celtic are missing Rangers.

“A lot of people will probably be trolling me for that, but I think a lot of people will agree.”
