Eastenders anniversary marked by weekly newspaper

A fictional newspaper has been brought to life by a weekly title to mark the 30th anniversary of Eastenders.

A souvenir edition of the Walford Gazette is featured in the latest issue of the Borehamwood & Elstree Times, on whose patch the soap is filmed.

The four-page souvenir features a spoof front page article about a major storyline in the programme, the unsolved murder of character Lucy Beale.

The killer is due to be revealed this week during a series of live shows being broadcast to mark the anniversary.

The masthead was designed from an original copy used on the set at Elstree studios, and features the same colour scheme.

Interviews with stars from the show are also found in the spoof Gazette.

Martin Buhagiar, group editor of the Times and Independent series, said: “Inside we looked at what plans the BBC has to mark the anniversary, the corporation’s plans for the future with a new Eastenders set about to be built and we were also able to interview two soap stars about the live shows and their thoughts on the soap’s future.”

Last month the Manchester Evening News mocked up a spoof front page of Coronation Street’s Weatherfield Gazette in tribute to actress Anne Kirkbride, who died aged 60.
