Weekly newspaper presents Duchess with baby grow

The Duchess of Cambridge was presented with a baby grow and welcome poster bearing a weekly freesheet’s logo during a visit to its patch.

Thanet Extra staff produced the gifts for the Duchess ahead of her last expected public engagement before she gives birth to her second child.

She was given the presents as she visited Margate’s Turner Contemporary art gallery yesterday.

The baby grow carries the Kent paper’s masthead and motto ‘Everyone Loves An Extra’.

A well wisher in the crowd agreed to handover the gifts and when the Duchess accepted, she chuckled before heading off to her second engagement.

Editor Leo Whitlock said: “We were really excited when we heard Kate was coming to town and decided we ought to do all we can to celebrate and have a bit of fun.

“We’re proud of this gorgeous corner of the Garden of England and the people that live here. Kate’s visit was the perfect time to shout it from the rooftops.”

Last week Thanet Extra also produced a downloadable ‘We Love You Kate’ poster for readers to hold up during her visit.

As well as extensive coverage for the paper, sister website KentOnline ran live updates throughout the visit including pictures, audio and video.

The team also interacted with the crowd via social media and there were updates from the visit on its radio station kmfm.

Leo added: “Thank you to our photographers, reporters, radio presenters, our multimedia news desk and promotions team for making the most of Kate’s visit.

“As a family-owned firm, we were able dedicate the proper resources to the task in hand and I hope it shows in our comprehensive coverage.”

Spose they will now give an outfit to every new babe born to readers. Now that would be a gesture to its supporters rather than a suck-up to Royalty.

I’m not sure that this is quite the cunning PR wheeze that the esteemed editor clearly thinks it is. I think he has forgotten what goes on in inside baby-grows. From now onwards every time I wipe a baby’s bottom and deal with the pile of excrement that is produced I will think of the Kent Messenger and its output. Not quite the desired effect, I guess.
