Departing rugby stars honoured with regional daily front page

A regional daily dedicated its front page to three sporting “legends” on its patch in honour of their last appearance there.

The Yorkshire Evening Post honoured rugby league players Jamie Peacock, Kevin Sinfield and Kylie Leuluai as they prepared to step out on to the Headingley turf for their last home game as Leeds Rhinos players.

After this season Peacock and Leuluai will retire, while Sinfield intends to switch sports and play rugby union professionally.

Between them, the trio have notched up more than 1,000 appearances for Leeds.YEP rhinos

The front page, pictured above, which was published on Friday, helped spur the side on to victory over St Helens in that evening’s Super League playoff semi-final.

They will now face Wigan in the league’s grand final at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Saturday.

YEP editor Jeremy Clifford said: “Friday night saw the last time three legends of the club would ever play in a full game at Headingley.

“We are proud supporters of the Rhinos and wanted to pay tribute to their contribution to the club.

“We are always looking to do something different with our front page and this idea came up in our regular weekly meeting with our heads of department.

“It gave a great lift on the day – and of course, the Rhinos won the match for a place in the final.”

Last month the club celebrated victory in the Challenge Cup with a parade through the streets of Leeds aboard the YEP’s bus, commemorating the 125th anniversary of both the newspaper and the Rhinos’ Headingley home.
