Daily’s young reporters scheme shortlisted for national award

Grimsby Young reportersA young reporters scheme run by a regional daily has been nominated for a national award celebrating volunteering with children.

North East Lincolnshire’s Young Reporters, run with the Grimsby Telegraph, has been shortlisted as finalists for a Youth Volunteering Award in the Children and Young People Now Awards.

The scheme started three-and-a-half years ago to give young people on the Telegraph’s patch a voice to challenge negative stereotypes about youth.

So far 57 young people have taken part in the scheme and its 200th column will be published in the newspaper by the end of the year.

The young reporters have had a column published in the Grimsby Telegraph every week since the project began.

It is the third time the scheme has been shortlisted for the award.

Michelle Hurst, deputy editor at the Grimsby Telegraph, said: “Fingers crossed that this is third time lucky for the Young Reporters as the scheme deserves recognition for so successfully giving young people a voice in North East Lincolnshire.

“As a partner in the scheme, we are delighted at the number of awards it has received so far, and it can only go on to achieve many more, having been established so successfully by the Young People’s Support Service team.

“From our point of view, we look forward to reading many more award-winning columns from the young writers.”
