Newspaper marks return of historic sporting event to UK

An historic sailing competition’s return to the UK has been celebrated by a regional daily.

The News, Portsmouth, provided extensive coverage of the opening event of the 35th America’s Cup, which took place on the seas off the coast of its patch between Thursday and Sunday.

The News set up a dedicated website to cover the event, which features a British team competing in British waters for the first time in 164 years.

Thursday’s edition of the paper, pictured below, also carried a special eight-page supplement about the competition.

The qualification event took place ahead of the 2017 edition of the Cup, and saw participating crews sail on the Solent.

It was the first time an America’s Cup race featuring a British team has been held off the shores of the United Kingdom since 1851.

The Cup is named for a boat called America, which won the race that year.
