Dailies thank 13,000 readers who signed organ donor register

Two sister dailies have thanked readers after 13,000 signed up to become organ donors in just six weeks.

The Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post launched their joint Be A Hero campaign in July, after revealing around 800 people across the county were facing long and life-threatening waits for organ transplants.

The drive came after it was revealed only 42 Leeds families consented to organ donation int 2014.

Among those to have pledged support for the campaign is former Yorkshire and England cricket legend Geoffrey Boycott, who signed up to the organ donation register following his own cancer battle.

Current cricket international Joe Root has also backed the bid, along with several Leeds United footballers.

The YEP thanked those who had signed up on Monday’s front page, pictured below.

Readers have been urged to share #BeAHero photos via social media and ask their places of work to back the cause.

Yorkshire Post Newspapers managing editor Nicola Furbisher said: “We have been amazed at how well the Be A Hero campaign has been supported by famous faces.

“But I’m sure they would join us by thanking the real heroes – the 13,000 of you that have signed up to the donor register.”

Nicola also thanked the many families who shared their stories with the YEP and the Yorkshire Post, adding: “It is those people, who have been through so much, who have inspired us to push forward with this campaign, and have in turn inspired so many to sign up to the register.”

Nicola could always spot a good campaign – well done to her and the Leeds team. A great result for those hoping for donated organs.
