City weekly revives historic buildings project

A city newspaper has revived a project which secured a £10,000 grant to aid research about historic buildings on its patch.

The Birmingham Post first ran a series of features on the city’s ‘Hidden Spaces’, exploring the secrets behind its old buildings, last year.

The scheme clicked with readers and even sparked the foundation of a photography exhibition, featuring shots of hidden architecture, which was attended by thousands of people.

Hidden Spaces, run in conjunction with Birmingham-based Associated Architects, has since received a £10,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant to enable it to become an ongoing resource through touring exhibitions, research work and an app.

Two new 12-page supplements about the project will feature in the 18 and 23 December editions of the paper.

Features about architecture will also feature on the Post’s website.

Editor Stacey Barnfield said: “What started life as a series of features about Birmingham’s buildings snowballed into something none of us could imagine, with the highlight being the Curzon Street photography exhibition attended by thousands of people.

“To get the Heritage Lottery Fund grant was the icing on the cake and will enable Hidden Spaces to evolve.

“Birmingham city centre is in the thick of massive change with several massive redevelopment projects changing its skyline – the biggest of these being the rebuilding of New Street Station.

“This change appears to have sparked a real thirst among Brummies to learn more about the city’s architectural history with a watchful eye on its future.”
