Weekly petitions Boris for 'fair deal' on rail

A weekly is petitioning Mayor of London Boris Johnson in a bid to get cheaper rail fares for its readers.

The Croydon Guardian aims to get the town’s two central railway stations (East Croydon and West Croydon) to be reclassified from Zone Five to Zone Four by Transport for London through its ‘Zone 4 Croydon’ campaign, logo picture below.

The realignment would mean cheaper rail fares for commuters travelling into the centre of the capital, to which Croydon lies closer than many stations currently designated as being within Zone Four.

Editor Nick Hitchens said the campaign, launched last month, is about getting “a fair deal for the people of Croydon”.

He added: “The change would save commuters hundreds of pounds a year and make the area more attractive to those looking to make Croydon their home.

“The knock-on effect of this could provide a huge boost to the local economy, stimulating business at the same time as millions are being invested in creating jobs, homes and improved public spaces in the town.

“We believe this change is both merited and could be another key element to launching Croydon’s vast potential.”

Reporter Chris Baynes has also launched his own light-hearted ‘campaign within a campaign’ to get a colleague, chief reporter Robert Fisk, to dress up as a giant Number Four to promote the cause, taking to Twitter to gain support.

Said Chris: “My tweet about our chief reporter dressing up as a number 4 was a essentially a joke, although I do hope to see it happen.”
