Union claims 25 redundancies at Scottish titles

The National Union of Journalists is claiming that 25 journalists’ jobs are to go at Trinity Mirror’s Scottish arm.

Media Scotland announced a month ago that it was seeking an undisclosed number of voluntary redundancies as it sought to “reposition” the business.

The union has now claimed that the company has accepted 25 voluntary redundancy requests although TM has refused to confirm the figure.

NUJ Scotland tweeted on Thursday:”Media Scotland accept 25 journalists for voluntary redundancy. Chapel mtg tomorrow at 3pm to discuss implications for remaining staff & titles.”

The union has so far not responded to requests for further information about the job losses.

It had previously voiced concern at the move saying journalists are already “overstretched.”

Media Scotland said last month: “While print circulations and advertising revenues are declining, we are seeing positive growth in digital. We need to restructure our business so we can invest and take advantage of that growth.

“Today we are announcing a voluntary severance scheme which will allow those who wish to apply the opportunity to request to leave their employment on enhanced terms.”
