Street artist wins vote to redesign weekly’s masthead

A street artist has won a weekly newspaper’s competition to design a new masthead for a special festival edition.

This week’s edition of the West Briton features the first illustrated masthead in its 200-year history – as voted for by the public.

Street artist Cosmic won a readers’ vote to create a masthead for the Truro edition of the paper to celebrate this week’s Truro Festival.

The edition, which publishers will become a collectors item, is now on sale in newsagents and stores across Truro and the surrounding area.

West Briton editor Jacqui Walls said: “Cosmic has done a fantastic job to redesign our iconic masthead in his own style. It’s given the paper a whole new look and early reaction has been really positive.

“Readers have been queuing up this morning to have their copies signed by the artist in their local newsagent – a real first for the West Briton.”

Cosmic has been signing copies of the paper in CP&S News in St Agnes and will be again signing copies in Truro tomorrow as part of the festival.

Readers chose his entry above three other shortlisted entries by cartoonist Nick Brennan, illustrator Keith Sparrow, children’s book illustrator Caroline Pedler.

Not the right design for newsprint. Poorly reproduced on my copy so out of focus. Cover price printed in two places. I did warn you…. #fail

The Editor’s managing director must like it because he is re-tweeting it to all and sundry. Perhaps a clue as to which audience this stunt is REALLY aimed at…

We did this on the WB last year! I think the legacy of our previous editor is being given a Kremlin-like makeover!

The term “masthead” is often used to describe the title or banner of a newspaper; this usage is actually incorrect, as a newspaper’s banner is better known as a nameplate.

Titlepiece, actually. ‘Masthead’ refers to the info box over the editorial column.
