Revamped newspaper to return to city centre after 33 years

An award-winning regional daily is to return to a city centre location after 33 years – with a brand new-look.

The Derby Telegraph – the current Midlands Newspaper of the Year – is relaunching tomorrow with a new picture-led front page and new masthead incorporating the famous Derby Ram.

The Local World title has also announced it will be moving offices next month to a new city centre base opposite one of the UK’s largest shopping centres.

It marks a return to the city centre for the Telegraph 33 years after it moved from its historic Corn Exchange premises to its current headquarters on Meadow Road.

The relaunch will be accompanied by a 10p cover price rise for the Saturday edition of the paper which will now go on sale at 55p.

However the weekday edition will remain priced at 45p.

The paper’s new offices from mid-October will be on Siddals Road in a building formerly occupied by the probation service, directly opposite the city’s Intu shopping centre.

Editor Neil White, pictured, said he was excited both by the move and by the new-look paper.

Said Neil: “We are moving to a modern, repurposed building with a much greater footfall around it, right next to one of the biggest shopping centres in the UK.

“The current building is apart from the community.  We want to make ourselves part of the community,” he added.

Neil said the revamped, magazine-style front page, with multiple “access points” to the content within, was designed to give the paper wider appeal.

“There’s a definite attempt there to say to women as well as men, come buy me,” he told HTFP.

However Neil insisted the changes would not alter the Telegraph’s commitment to campaigns and investigations which have seen it win numerous awards in recent years.

“We will be involved in investigations like we were with al-Medinah school, we will be involved in hard hitting campaigns in the way the Telegraph has built its reputation on.  What we are doing is adding a new dimension to our coverage,” he said.

The relaunch will also see the launch of two new supplements – a weekend leisure and lifestyle supplement on Saturdays, and a 12-page ‘Celebrations’ section on Tuesdays featuring special occasions, happy events and proud moments.

Tomorrow’s relaunch edition has gone up to 104 pages – around double the usual size of the Saturday paper.

    The Derby Telegraph always seem to be getting it right, and doing the right thing.
    I wish our people up and down the chain of command at Trinity Mirror would take note.

    Well done DT. A local paper should be in the heart of the community, not stuck up a cul-de-sac off a dirt track. Good move – back to the people who matter … the readers.

    A ‘repurposed’ building? Neil White would have been laughed out of the newsroom if he had used a ‘word’ like that on the Birmingham Mail.

    Photography is dead, that will never work !

    Snapper is right. Front page pic will hardly ever bring you extra sales unless its some kind of disaster. What about a proper news exclusive? ( ie not police handout, court report, council report or press release, etc)

    The move of at least one once-major Evening Paper out of town started a decline that lost it about 100,000 readers from peak sales to date.
    Local offices, local reporters, lively paper. Anything else is just press releases.
