Regional titles honoured at annual production awards

A series of regional titles have been honoured an the annual Newspaper Awards dedicated to highlighting excellence in newspaper production.

Last night’s ceremony saw the Irish News named Regional Newspaper of the Year for titles with a circulation of over 25,000 circulation, while The Journal, Newcastle, took the trophy for the under 25,000 circulation category.

In the Weekly Newspaper of the Year category, Ireland’s The Impartial Reporter took the top prize and was praised for its “fresh, modern appeal and superb design.”

Other regional winners included Cornwall and Devon Media, which won the Regional Supplement/Magazine of the Year prize for Cornwall Today.

Highly commended in the regional newspaper of the year categories were the Press and Journal, Aberdeen (over 25,000) and The Herald, Plymouth (under 25,000.)

The Oxford Times was highly commended in the weekly category, while the Eastern Daily Press was commended for the Weekend Newspaper of the Year prize.

Gary Cullum, director of The Newspaper Awards, says: “What this year’s Awards has clearly shown is, that despite the challenges that inevitably lie ahead, our extraordinary industry has the vision, the technology and the skills to prosper.

“Looking at the range of entries presented before this year’s judges, it is clear that production of world-class leading news media publishing platforms remains safe under our watch.”

    ‘The Journal, Newcastle, took the trophy for the under 25,000 circulation category’

    I hope no-one is celebrating the the paper winning this award only because circulation has dropped far enough recently to qualify for that category.
