Regional finds World Cup winner on doorstep

A regional daily newspaper has had a hand in finally unearthing a World Cup winner.

Brazil 2014 left England’s hopes of footballing glory on hold for another four years.

But the Hartlepool Mail has been able to reveal a Jules Rimet-style success in its own backyard.

For Hartlepool newsagent Ilona Gunning has the best World Cup window in the business – with a trophy and a cheque for £200 to prove it.

Ilona, and partner Chris Trewit, won an industry-wide competition, run by the National Federation of Retail Newsagents’ Sunderland and South Shields branch.

The winning window – at the Newsmarket shop in Hartlepool – was chosen by the sales team from Johnston Press’ North East Press division.

The Mail’s Elaine Simpson presented the award to Ilona while shop assistant Maxine Lilley looks on.

Congrats to JP for another perfect example as to why photographers are crucial to any newspaper.
It seems to me that JP now stands for ‘Just Print’. Readers are not stupid.

Wow, that Jules Rimet-style shop front display really is up there with Germany’s 2014 win, Pele, Bobby Moore and the ’66 team!

Sorry HTFP but this hyperbole over some not very interesting newspaper biz news (I’m also thinking the Great Floode of the Licolnshire Tesco car park here) looks a bit, well, odd?

Another non-story from a JP office and people will begin to talk. And I am praying that world-class pic was taken by the newsagent’s brother’s niece rather than the Mail’s snapper.
