Regional daily’s business awards raise thousands

A regional daily has donated more than £2,500 to Alzheimer’s research after raising the cash at its annual business awards.

The money was raised following a raffle which took place at the Express & Star Business Awards last month.

The newspaper donated the money to Alzheimers in honour of Wolverhampton Wanderers great Bert Williams, who raised more than £250,000 for the charity before his death in January aged 93.

Editor Keith Harrison this week presented Emma Dowler from the Alzheimers Society with a cheque for £2,650.

Said Keith: “It is a fantastic cause and we had amazingly generous support from everyone who attended the night.

“It’s great to be able to support such a great cause. Thank you to everyone who contributed.”

Mrs Dowler added: “We are really pleased that the Express & Star are supporting us. The money is going to be used to support the local community, to help support meetings of the society, Alzheimers cafes and give out advice, so they can become part of the community.

“The cafes is a relaxing place where carers of sufferers of Alzheimers can meet, listen to talks and find out advice, which is helpful because it allows them to socialise.”
