Keith Perry, currently sports editor of the Coventry Telegraph, is to return to the Birmingham Mail in the newly-created role of football editor.

He will lead a newly-restructured team of eight content editors and football writers.

The changes have been introduced as part of the ‘Newsroom 3.1′ blueprint being introduced across Trinity Mirror to support a digital-first approach to publishing, with football coverage seen as a key element in driving digital audiences.

Keith, pictured, returns to the Mail after an 11-year-break during which he has worked for the Derby Telegraph, Leicester Mercury, Sunday Mercury and freelanced for The Sun, Daily Mail and Daily Express.

He takes up his new position on Monday.

David Brookes, Midlands’ editor-in-chief, said: “Keith will head up a newly-structured team of club writers and football content editors in our drive to increase digital audiences. I’m delighted he is coming back to Brum.”

The new-look team also comprises Steve Wollaston as football content editor, Mat Kendrick as fans engagement editor, Richard Jackson as senior story editor and Brett Gibbons as sports writer.

Club writers will be Gregg Evans (Aston Villa), Brian Dick (West Bromwich Albion), Colin Tattum (Birmingham City) and Bill Howell (Wolverhampton Wanderers).
