Regional daily to cease printing on its patch

A regional daily is to cease being printed in the city it serves with operations transferred to more modern facilities elsewhere.

The Bradford Telegraph & Argus will now be printed at Trinity Mirror’s presses in Chadderton, Oldham, with staff at the existing presses told they will have to relocate.

The move will also see sister title The Press, York, which is currently printed in Bradford, come off presses at TM’s facilities in Teesside.

Owner Newsquest says the change will allow more colour pages to be printed in both titles.

The company’s Yorkshire and North East managing director, David Coates, said he expected sales to improve as a result of the switch.

He said: “We are suspending the remaining print production in Bradford and the last two newspapers that are printed here will move to more modern printing plants in Oldham and Teesside.”

The current printing press, installed in 1980, is only capable of printing 50 per cent of pages in colour.

David added: “This means that these newspapers will benefit from more colour and much better quality reproduction.

“We’re currently consulting with the printing staff in Bradford who have a right to transfer under TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings and Protection of Employment Regulations).”

While this might make economic sense and provide more colour, David Coates is wrong to think there’ll be more sales.
People buy papers for the stories and pictures, not print quality. And Mr Coates’ record on that is awful.

An appalling way to treat staff. How could anyone take on a mortgage and family responsibilities and work for these goons who run what’s left of the UK newspaper industry.

Very sad for the staff, not the sort of news you want just weeks before Xmas, and with commuting across the Pennines in winter being anything but fun.
Amazed that a paid-for daily is using a 1980 press – is this a record?
Sales could do with a lift as they’re about half what they were six years ago.
    Best wishes to all involved.
