Press charity serves up ‘second helping Fern’

A top TV host is the ‘main course’ for the second helping of a press charity lunch’s landmark birthday bash.

Fern Britton is guest of honour at an autumn special of the Midlands branch of the Journalists’ Charity – this year celebrating its 150th anniversary.

The former host of Ready, Steady Cook, BBC Breakfast Time and ITV’s This Morning will be talking about her life and career as well as taking questions from the audience at the Birmingham event.

The lunch – at Edgbaston’s Botanical Gardens on Thursday 16 October – is the second to be held this year by the regional arm of the press charity, following the sell-out success of the first at Villa Park in March.

Midlands branch chairman Steve Dann said the charity was looking forward to TV host’s appearance at the lunch. “She is one of the biggest names in television and I would advise people to book their tickets now,” he said.

The Midlands branch normally holds one event a year but has added an additional one to this year’s roster to coincide with the historic charity’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Since starting in 1864, the charity has worked to support journalists in need and as well as distributing grants. Today it runs a care home for retired journalists and their dependents at Sandy Cross, Dorking in Surrey.
