Pre-Christmas bonus for 700 Tindle staff

Staff of local newspaper group Tindle Newspapers are to get a pre-Christmas bonus of up to £400 for the second year running, it was announced yesterday.

Last year Tindle paid bonuses ranging from £125-£400 for full-time staff with pro-rata figures for part-time staff.

This year the group is repeating the gesture with payments this time ranging from £150-£400.

Actual figures paid will be based on the profit made by individual companies in the Tindle Group during the past six months. The overall cost of the move is likely to be in the region of £150,000-200,000.

Tindle Newspapers said the announcement to staff was being made this week and payments would be made in the current month wherever possible.

Chairman Sir Ray Tindle and managing director Wendy Craig thanked all managements and staff for their “great efforts” during the current year.

Last month Tindle announced a £500 across the board pay rise for all full-time members of staff.

The group publishes more than 200 local titles.

What is it like working for Tindle?
Hope it is better than the likes of TM, JP, Newsquest.

Brilliant! Well-trained, well-paid, well-regarded. But that was 50 years ago. Thank you, Surrey Advertiser.

Wouldn’t want to work for any other newspaper group. Is it perfect in Tindleland? Far from it. Does it still have some integrity and understanding of what local newspapers are about? Absolutely. In our small teams we get on and do what we do best, that is to bring readers the news and features they want, not shoving advertorial rubbish or second rate user-generated material down their throats.
Local World? Do us all a favour and sell your titles to someone who will respect them.

What this fails to mention is that no one in Tindle has had a pay rise for about 10 years! Plus pay scales are well below the industry average. So perhaps not as generous as it seems but great PR of course.

He should be able to afford it – not like he hires journalists, is it?

The last time a local Tindle paper here was taking on journalists the salary was about £12K regardless of experience or qualifications. And that was for people lucky enough to be getting a contract. The papers themselves are run on a shoestring and many suffer from underinvestment, but having each one pay its own way rather than staying afloat by sucking funds out of the parent company makes sense.

There’s a lot to be said for Sir Ray’s slow and steady approach, when you consider the large companies crashing from one iceberg to the next and scattering journalists overboard by the dozen.

Like Observer said, it’s far from perfect but at least with Tindle there is some common sense involved, something that is painfully lacking among the upper echelons of newspaper management generally.
