Political editor switches to PR role with Tories

A former political editor at two regional titles has been appointed to a new role with the Conservative party.

Eddie Barnes left his role as political editor at Scotland on Sunday and The Scotsman last month and has now become the new director of strategy and communications for the Scottish Conservative party.

In his new role, he will advise Scottish party leader Ruth Davidson MSP on strategy and communications in the run-up to the Euro elections and the independence referendum.

Eddie worked at Scotsman Publications for 10 years as political editor for Scotland on Sunday and later for The Scotsman as well.

The role with the Scottish Conservatives was previously held by former Scotsman editor John McLellan, who was appointed to the role in June 2012.

He left the position after becoming director of the Scottish Newspaper Society last autumn.

Said Eddie: “I’m thrilled to be given this opportunity at such an exciting time in Scottish politics.

“Ruth is changing the Scottish Conservative party for the better by appealing to a new generation of voters and challenging the lazy consensus that exists in areas like education.

“I want to help Ruth show the country that the Scottish Conservatives are a big tent party, bringing the values of individual freedom, personal responsibility and real localism to all voters.

“I believe the referendum on independence can revitalise politics in this country and I look forward to helping Ruth make the positive case for Scotland’s place within the United Kingdom.”

Ms Davidson added: “The Scottish Conservatives are changing. We are building a new offering for the centre right in Scotland and articulating a powerful case for Scotland’s continued place in the United Kingdom. Eddie will be pivotal in helping me to articulate that case to the country.

“I am delighted to welcome someone of Eddie’s thoughtfulness and standing to the team in what will be a critical year in Scotland’s history.”
