‘Oh bugger!’ Football boss’s exit rains on paper’s parade

Croydon Advertiser published the supplement looking ahead to Crystal Palace's season alongside this week's paper. However hours after the supplement went to press, Palace manager Tony Pulis walked out in a dispute over transfer policy. Pulis had been featured on the front cover of the supplement and Advertiser editor Glenn Ebrey recounted his feelings in a blog post beginning with the words:  “Oh bugger’

Wrote Glenn: “We were up until the small hours compiling the supplement, neatly rounded off by a natty cartoon, portraying Mr Pulis alongside his cast of stars in a mocked-up poster for Pulis Academy 2 (geddit?)

“All very satisfying, until the point where the main focus of this 12-page bonanza leaves the club before it has been seen by a single reader.

“As a newspaper editor, this evening has been a ruddy nightmare. Going to press roughly 20 hours before your paper hits the shops is bound to carry some element of risk.

“But, after eight years as a news editor and editor, never have I felt quite such a proverbial custard pie in the face as I do right now.”

Glenn admitted that the manager’s shock exit had “rather peed on our Palace supplement bonfire,” with Pulis featured on the front of the supplement and most of its inside pages.

But he told readers: “There is plenty of other material in the supplement, in fairness, and I hope you all still find it an enjoyable and informative read.”

If they are are a Palace paper serious enough about covering the Eagles to produce a 12-page supplement then presumably they would have known as much as anyone the high risk of Pulis leaving ahead of last night. There were strong rumours going around that he was on his way, so why not change the supplement or at least tone down the emphasis of Pulis as a precaution to avoid any embarrassment?

Are Mark Lazarus and Stevie Kember still lining up for Palace, Glenn? Oh, sorry, that was uncalled for… Come on you Glaziers!

I’d start crying if I’d worked hard on something like that. I am certain I would have wanted it pulping (PS – worked on many a supplement, I know how draining they can be on top of your normal work)

Pulis Academy 2 still works as the whole Palace situation is an absolute farce anyway.

If you let the manager who was voted the best last season leave, you, as a club, will end up where you deserve.

It’s called the Premier League, not the Premiership.
