New national news magazine launched by publisher

A new magazine is being launched by publisher DC Thomson to offer a weekly digest of Scottish news, views and opinions.

The Stooshie – named after the Scottish dialect word for a rumpus or commotion – aims to provide readers with “Scotland in seven days”.

The Dundee-based group, whose titles include the Sunday Post and the Press and Journal, is launching the magazine ahead of this year’s Commonwealth Games, Ryder Cup and independence referendum.

A dummy issue will be distributed free of charge on Friday 16 May and the the first issue proper will go on sale a week later, priced £2.50.

Editor-in-Chief Richard Neville said: “This year is going to be an extraordinary news year for Scotland.

“The Stooshie’s editorial team will work hard to bring readers the week’s top stories drawing on a range of coverage from the country’s newspapers, magazines and leading websites.”

The magazine will include a regular weekly column from comedian and BBC Scotland presenter Fred MacAulay.

Other regular items are set to include: “Seven by Seven”, which answers seven key questions on issues that matter to readers; “The Main Event”, a rundown of the week’s biggest stories presented in bite-sized chunks, “Around Scotland” featuring quirky stories from Lerwick to Lockerbie, plus the big sporting and political stories from across the week.

The magazine will also include the latest on Scottish arts, food and drink, books, travel and property.

Richard said: “The Stooshie taps into the Scottish appetite for debate and presents readers with a succinct summary of the week’s top stories.

“It gives readers an easily digestible taste of what is causing a ‘Stooshie’ in Scotland.”

Chief executive officer for DC Thomson Publishing, Ellis Watson said: “While I am excited about the idea and the initiative, I am really excited about the timing; with the vote for independence, Commonwealth Games, Ryder Cup and all the other extraordinary and dynamic events going on right now, there has never been a better time for The Stooshie.”
