Veteran newspaperman Ian Mean is to retire as editor of the Western Daily Press in February, publisher Local World has announced.
Ian, 68, joined the newspaper earlier having previously been editor of the Citizen, Gloucester for ten years and later content director for LW’s Bristol, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Dorset titles.
Bristol Post editor Mike Norton will now have overall responsibility for the WDP in his role as senior editorial director for Bristol and Bath.
However LW has made clear a new editor will be recruited for the WDP to run the title on a day-to-day basis.
Ian, pictured, will be staying on as a part time consultant editor to Bristol, Gloucestershire and the rest of the region concentrating on developing business and commercial partnerships.
Said Ian:” I have thoroughly enjoyed my sixteen years with the group and helping to develop the teams of journalists who have worked with me. I was particularly proud of the team at The Citizen where we won the national newspaper of the year award twice.
“I have developed long standing commercial partnerships with customers, and this is an area I look forward to growing further.
Sarah Pullen, managing director Bristol, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Dorset said: “Ian is a great ambassador for the media industry who has a great energy and focus after 40 years in the business. It is a real privilege to work with him.”

Pleasing to see that replacing the excellent former editor Tim Dixon resulted in an uplift in sales, a surge in staff morale and assurance that the paper was in the hands of someone in it for the long term, with vision, attention to detail and support from the management with a long term strategy. Not.

False alarm: Buy crashed shares in pin-stripe cloth.
I think, Doodlebug, you’ll find that that’s a chalk-stripe

Top, top man. Always a good listener, always gave sound advice, helped me enormously. Oh… and wore the best ties in the business.

A fine Editor indeed. Ian gave me my first job on a daily paper and was a pleasure to work with at the Gloucester Citizen. He believed in me as a keen reporter who wanted the best for the city. As for his attire, it is bold and only adds to Ian’s character!

Notice the trend for people running more than one paper? Really not good!
