Lonely Planet journalist shares tips for budding writers

An award-winning journalist is preparing to share his tips for getting into print in a series of workshops over the next few months.

University journalism lecturer David Atkinson, pictured – a Chester-based freelance travel writer and blogger – is splitting his courses between newspaper and magazine familiarization and helping writers find their voice as a blogger

David, who wrote the Lonely Planet Wales guidebook and won a British Guild of Travel Writers’ award last year, will be running his first workshop at the Glynne Arms in Hawarden, Flintshire, on Friday 17 October and again in February 2015.

He said: “A lot of people have great ideas for articles, and would like to develop them for publication, but they don’t have the insider understanding of how the media industry works, how to approach editors and how to turn those ideas into commissions.

“The concept behind this first course is to explode some of the myths and, through expert practical advice based on 15 years as a working freelancer, help aspiring writers to get their work into print.”

To book a place on either of David’s courses, call 07974 390436 or book online at atkinsondavid.com

    First tip. Learn basic grammar.
Second tip. Don’t try to be arty, keep it straight and never use civil servant phrases like thus far and prior to. If you don’t know the alternatives get a job in a bank!
