Latest bidders for Local TV franchises unveiled

Media regulator Ofcom has unveiled the list of bidders for the latest set of franchises to run Local TV services.

Ministers want to see a network of up to 60 local TV channels with the first group of 19 due to come on stream from later this year.

It has now unveiled the successful bidders for the latest tranche of franchises now up for grabs.

They cover the areas of Bangor, Basingstoke, Guildford, Luton, Maidstone, Mold, Reading, Salisbury and Swansea.

Of these Bangor, Basingstoke, Guildford, Luton, Reading and Salisbury each attracted a single bid.

London-based That’s Media, run by Daniel Cass, bid successfully for five of the franchises – Basingstoke, Guildford, Luton, Reading and Salisbury.

The winning bid in Bangor, North Wales, came from Bay TV Gwynedd, a sister operation to Bay TV Liverpool.

In the other three areas, there will now be a judging process to choose the winner from two applicants apiece.

In Maidstone, KMTV – run by newspaper publisher the KM Group, will be up against TV Kent, based in Faversham.

Contesting the Mold franchise are Bay TV Clywd and Serch TV Mold, based in the Wirral.

And Bay TV are also in the running for the Swansea licence where they are up against Love Swansea.

Four of the franchises advertised as part of the current tranche – Barnstaple, Londonderry, Gloucester and Plymouth – have yet to find a bidder.
