Genital mutilation horror inspires award-winner

A journalist graduate from Nottingham Trent University has won an award designed to raise awareness of women’ s issues in the media.

Laura Hough has been named the winner of this year’s Soroptimist International’s Nottingham Student Award.

The award is funded from a bequest by former club member Barbara Bailey and aims to raise students’ awareness of women’s issues.

Laura’s project highlighted the problems of female genital mutilation carried out in the UK and abroad. Kelly Petterssen was given the runner-up prize for a project about girl gangs in Nottingham.

    What an odd headline. Is it possible to be ‘inspired’ by genital mutilation if you’re not some sort of deviant?!
