Queen congratulates monthly as it marks 75th birthday

Some of Yorkshire’s biggest names are among the contributors for a monthly magazine’s special birthday edition.

The Dalesman was first published months before the outbreak of World War Two and marks its 75th anniversary next month.

Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Bernard Ingham and honorary knight ‘Sir’ Geoffrey Boycott have written articles for the birthday edition which will also feature Alan Titchmarsh, Alan Bennett, Dickie Bird and the Calendar Girls.

Congratulations on the milestone have also been received from both the Queen and Prime Minister David Cameron.

Mr Cameron said: “I want to wish the Dalesman huge congratulations on reaching their 75th anniversary. The Dalesman is a Yorkshire icon, and I’d like to wish you all the best for the next 75 years.”

The Queen’s Lady-in-Waiting wrote: “Her Majesty was interested to learn that the magazine will be celebrating its 75th anniversary in April. The Queen hopes that all the staff at Dalesman have a happy and successful 2014.”

The Dalesman, which covers the whole of the historic county of Yorkshire, focuses primarily on the county’s countryside.

Its editor, Adrian Braddy, joined the title two years ago from the Craven Herald and Pioneer and is only the sixth editor in its history.

Said Adrian:  ““It is a real honour to edit Dalesman in its 75th anniversary year. There is nothing quite like it anywhere in the world.”

Its founding editor was Harry J Scott, also a former Craven Herald journalist, who ran the magazine from the front room of his home in Clapham, in the Yorkshire Dales.
