Former local radio presenter dies aged 69

An award-winning regional broadcaster who went on to find acclaim on a national stage has died following a long illness aged 69.

Former BBC Radio Foyle host Gerry Anderson went on to present on BBC Radio Ulster, BBC Northern Ireland and BBC Radio 4 in a career spanning 30 years.

The Northern Irishman, who took the 1990 Gold Sony Award for best regional broadcaster and for the next three broadcaster of the year at the Entertainment and Media Awards, was inducted into Radio Academy Hall of Fame before taking Royal Television Society Regional Presenter of the Year in 2004.

Mickey Bradley, a member of The Undertones who worked with Londonderry-born Gerry on BBC Radio Foyle said: “He broke the mould”. Gerry was very funny off-air as he was on-air.”
