Editor moves on to PR role after year in job

A weekly newspaper editor has moved into council PR after a year in the role.

Amanda Graham was appointed editor of the Lennox Herald after 15 years at the title as part of a wider reshuffle by newspaper publisher Trinity Mirror in March 2013.

However Amanda has now taken up a role as a press officer at West Dunbartonshire Council with Martin Laing due to take over in the editor’ chair.

Martin moves to the Herald from the Johnston Press-owned Galloway Gazette and Carrick Gazette newspapers where he is currently editor.

Before taking up his current role, Martin was a senior production journalist at The Herald, Glasgow for a number of years.

He has also previously worked for the Stirling Observer, The Standard in Hong Kong and the Edinburgh Evening News.

It seems to me that an increasing number of local newspaper editors no longer place much value on doing the job for one of the big groups…even editors of regional dailies. It’s not hard to see why. As circulations plummet, they work under terrible pressure with scant resources and face the chop at any moment from head office. Where’s the satisfaction or enjoyment in that ?
