Deputy editor leaves regional daily after 10 years

The deputy editor of the Cambridge News has left the Local World-owned title after nearly ten years on the paper.

Paul Kirkley had been second-in-command to editor Paul Brackley since March 2013, having previously been the paper’s head of magazines and features.

He was also an award-winning columnist, having won EDF Energy’s columnist of the year award in both 2013, for his satirical column Newsround, and 2011 for his column about being a first-time dad, About a Boy.

Before joining the News in 2005, Paul had been features editor of the Basingstoke Observer.  His successor in Cambridge is expected to be announced within the next fortnight.

Other recent job moves in the regional press include:

* Martin Dunne, a reporter on the Comet Series in North Herts, has left to study politics at Cambridge University. Oliver Pritchard will be covering his Stevenage patch, while James Scott will continue to cover Letchworth and Baldock.

* Cumbria magazine has appointed John Manning as editor in succession to Kevin Hopkinson.  John will also continue to serve as editor on sister title Lakeland Walker, while Kevin will continue to edit Down Your Way magazine.

* James Trudgian, head of audience development for Newsquest, has announced he is leaving the regional publisher at the end of next month.

* Newham Reporter sports reporter Steve Bacon is to leave the title in mid-November.

So sorry to hear Paul has left the Cambridge News as I think he will be a great loss to regional journalism.
I appointed him as Features Editor when I edited the Cambridge News and he showed the ability to go on to be an editor in his own right. He was one step away from achieving that target.
He always had great ideas, vision, a nose for a story and a super sense of humour. And he was a great writer and lay-out man. Regional newspapers cannot afford to lose people like Paul – but they will all the time they are managing decline in such a crass fashion.
Local World soon to be known as “No readers left in the Local World”
I wish Paul and his family all the best for the future.
