Daily launches bid for more football cheerleaders

A regional daily writer has issued a call for professional football clubs to employ cheerleaders at their grounds.

The Birmingham Mail has published a piece on its website entitled “39 reasons why the Premier League needs cheerleaders”, accompanied by a gallery of 39 pictures of American cheerleaders in various poses and revealing costumes.

The Trinity Mirror title’s call comes after the cheerleading squad of the Atlanta Falcons danced on the pitch at Tuesday evening’s game between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Middlesbrough.

The paper claims the cheerleaders’ appearance at Wanderers’ Molineux stadium proved a “successful tactic” as the home team went on to win the game 2-0.

In a statement, the Mail wrote: “Now the Birmingham Mail is calling on the Premier League and the Championship to bring cheerleaders to our game.

“The glamour and razzmatazz is just what we need to give fans a boost on a cold Monday night at the football.

“So come on clubs, get those pom-poms out.

The piece concludes:  “Need more convincing? Take a look at the gallery…”

Call me cynical, but I don’t believe this is a genuine call for football cubs to take on cheerleaders.

In fact, I think you could paraphrase the headline as the more openly misogynistic “39 pictures of fit birds for you to click on, go on, click on them, ooh you dirty bugger”.

Quiet news day…and the fact that Htfp has picked it up proves again that no publicity is bad publicity.

Regardless of views on sexism, the idea of cheerleaders at English football matches is far from practical. The club I support introduced them in the late 1990s. At the start of the season, there was a spirited group of about 20. However, by mid-November, they had dwindled away to a hardy half a dozen and they probably didn’t want to be there on a cold and wet Tuesday night!
