Journalist couple win charity honour

A husband and wife team have won a charity’s regional journalist of the year award.

Burton Mail journalist Stephen Sinfield and his wife Katherine, a leukaemia survivor, were awarded the Anthony
Nolan accolade in a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament in recognition of their continued support for the
organisation.

Katherine was also commended in the volunteer of the year category for her continuing work to increase stem cell
donor numbers in Burton and the surrounding area.

Between the couple, pictured below, they regularly wrote pieces in the Mail documenting her fight against the illness
and promoting the work of Anthony Nolan.

Stephen said: “It’s a real honour to receive such an accolade – especially when it’s presented at the Houses of
Parliament.

“When my wife Katherine was diagnosed with leukaemia in April 2013, highlighting the illness and the need for more
stem cell donors in the newspaper was just second nature.

“As Katherine’s illness progressed so did the coverage and although she is now thankfully in remission, the
campaign continues to help raise awareness.

“Winning awards for what we have done never crossed our minds.

“It’s rewarding enough to know that the continued coverage in the Burton Mail is hopefully helping to save lives.
Every extra donor we manage to attract is another potential life saved.”

The Mail itself also received praise from the charity, with an Anthony Nolan spokesman adding: “The paper’s
support for Anthony Nolan in the regional press has been unrivalled, with a constant stream of excellent stories
about our work.”
