Award-winning reporter quits regional daily

An award winning reporter has left a regional daily after what she termed “ten glorious years.”

Gina Marden, crime reporter of the Basildon Echo, has revealed on Twitter that she will not be returning to the title after going on maternity leave.

Gina, left, won the Daily Journalist of the Year award at this year’s EDF Energy East of England Media Awards, ending the seven-year reign of her Echo colleague Jon Austin.

She tweeted:  “Thanks to all my followers. I resigned from the echo a week ago after 10 glorious years so will no return from maternity leave. Thanks xx”

Other recent job moves in the regional press include:

  • Emma McKinney, comsumer editor for Trinity Mirror Midlands has returned to the Birmingham Mail, Birmingham Post, Coventry Telegraph and Sunday Mercury from maternity leave.
  • Evesham and Cotswold reporter Freya Leng has left the paper and will join the Cambridge News later this month.

  • Kim Inam has left as news editor of North London Newspapers.

All the best to Gina, one of the people who made my time as editor so enjoyable. A really committed crime reporter and chief reporter.
