Weekly appeals for storage space after office move

A weekly newspaper which moved from its base of 39 years last month has appealed to readers to help it find a new home for its archives.

The Mansfield Chad moved from its offices on Newgate Lane to new headquarters in Sherwood Oaks Business Park in August but there is no room there for its newspaper archives, which date back to the 1950s.

In a bid to find a new home for the collection, news editor Stephen Thirkill put out an appeal on BBC Radio Nottingham.

He told readers: “Modern offices are not always designed to have a great deal of storage space so we need to find somewhere to store our archives, which are a valuable record of the history of the Mansfield and Ashfield area.

“We have tried a number of places but they do not have the space. These archives shed light on how times have changed, for example, some editions have adverts for cigarettes. It would be great if a local history group could help us accommodate them.”

When it moved to its new offices, the Johnston Press title said its former base was too big for current staff levels and the building had been put up for sale.

Anyone know what is planned for the vast Yorkshire Post/Yorkshire Evening Post archives and photo library? Presumably JP won’t want to pay for extra office space in the prestigious No1 building. Many of the staff these days probably aren’t aware of the history of their titles, which is a shame.

“Modern offices are not always designed to have a great deal of storage space.”

They are if the incoming tenant asks for such space to be included in the ft-out, or pays a little more rent to have such space.
    What next …?
The Queen downsizes her property assets, then asks for help looking after the Crown Jewels?

Unbelievable. I think sometimes newspapers totally forget they are commercial enterprises. What small business doesn’t want extra space for free? Sheesh.

Sorry, this sounds like a charity appeal. Embarrassing!

The precise fate of the extensive Yorkshire Post/Evening Post archive is an interesting subject, especially as the old Wellington Street office is due to be demolished. It was a priceless asset and I trust that its removal has been handled with care.

Most newspapers have handed their archives over to their local council to put in libraries or other council buildings for the public to use.

The storing of papers is now a massive Health and Safety nightmare for many places and due to the fire regulations on how and where paper can be stored many newspapers are deciding it is not worth the hassle to be honest.

Does House Rules really find it a hassle to be honest?
