Website sees jobs upsurge despite industry gloom

Job advertising on HoldtheFrontPage increased by nearly a third in 2012 despite the prevailing gloom in the newspaper industry.

The number of jobs advertised on the industry’s premier recruitment website went up from 503 in 2011 to 666 last year – an increase of 32.4pc.

Revenues from recruitment advertising overall also increased by 33.9pc while within the regional press sector, revenues were up by an incredible 81.4pc.

The increases came against a backdrop of continuing cost-cutting in the industry which saw hundreds of journalist roles disappear.

HoldtheFrontPage publisher Paul Linford said:  “Although 2012 remained a difficult commercial environment for local and regional newspapers, the increase in the number of jobs being advertised on our site surely gives some grounds for optimism about the future.

“While we do not in any way underestimate the scale of the challenges facing the sector, I hope the continuing success of the site helps demonstrate that not all is doom and gloom as is sometimes suggested in the wider media.”

The jobs pages of the site received more than 1.6m page views throughout the year and advertisers continue to express widespread satisfaction with our service.

Express & Star executive editor Mark Drew said: “We receive a very good response to adverts placed on HoldtheFrontPage. It is a very quick and efficient way to fill important vacancies within the company.”

Ah yes, but how many employers actually didn’t go ahead with filling the position? Deciding on cutting costs even more?
    A shameful practice
