Souvenir edition marks club’s Wembley showdown

A town’s historic sporting moment was celebrated with a wraparound poster front and almost 40 pages of dedicated coverage by the local paper.

The Northampton Chronicle & Echo produced a souvenir edition to mark the unique sporting achievement of both the town’s top-flight sports teams reaching their respective play-off finals.

Northampton Town head to Wembley tomorrow in the League 2 play-offs, while and Northampton Saints go to Twickenham the following week to fight for the Premiership title.

Ahead of the Wembley game, the paper produced an editorial wrap-around created by deputy chief photographer, Kelly Cooper.

She took a photograph of the Cobblers players walking away from the camera, then travelled to Wembley to get the right shot before transposing one onto the other.

Editor David Summers praised the result.

“The final image was superb, with real attention to detail, and the reaction we have had on Twitter has been excellent,” he said.

“Full credit to Kelly, it was an great piece of creative work.”

The paper included a 32-page sports preview supplement, along with seven pages of pre-Wembley coverage in news.

The edition also included an exclusive interview with murdered schoolgirl Tia Sharp’s father in the wake of Stuart Hazell’s guilty plea and life sentence, which went on the normal front page inside the wrap.

David added: “It was a great team effort by everyone at the Chron this week to produce a cracking paper throughout.

“It’s a busy few weeks for the sports team – not only do they have the Cobblers going to Wembley this weekend, they’ve also got the small matter of Saints going to Twickenham – and they have produced excellent content in print and online.”
