An “overwhelming majority” of UK national and regional newspaper and magazine titles are behind the industry-led Royal Charter currently before the Privy Council, the Newspaper Society has claimed.
More than 200 publishers and thousands of titles have been involved in setting up the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO).
A statement from the Newspaper Society reads: “Enormous progress is being made in an equal partnership between regional and local newspapers, Scots, Welsh, Northern Irish and UK national titles, and the whole of the magazine and periodical sector.
“This emphasises the strength and diversity of print and online publications throughout the UK and their commitment to the establishment of IPSO.”
If it is given approval, IPSO could be active as early as December or January 2014.
