Scottish daily loses almost a third of its readers

A Scottish daily newspaper has seen its readership fall by 32pc year-on-year, according to the latest figures.

The National Readership Survey says  Glasgow-based daily The Herald had an estimated readership per print edition of 109,000 for the period October 2012 to September 2013, down from a figure of 160,000 for the previous year.

However The Courier in Dundee reported a rise in readership, up 6pc from 127,000 per edition to 135,000 while DC Thomson stablemate The Sunday Post daw a decrease in readership of 23pc, from 787,000 to 606,000.

Of the other Sunday titles north of the border, Scotland on Sunday saw a rise in estimated readership of 7pc per edition to 150,000, whilerival the Sunday Herald saw a fall of 33pc to 84,000, echoing the steep fall experienced by its sister daily.

The NRS figures, which have been published this morning, are a result of surveys with thousands of individuals and differ from the circulation figures produced by ABC.

They show further falls in estimated print readership for The Press and Journal of 14pc to 172,000, the Glasgow Evening Times of 10pc to 126,000, The Scotsman of 16pc to 108,000 and the Yorkshire Post of 9pc to 122,000.

The NRS has also published combined print and digital figures for the regional titles for the period, with the digital data relating to September, although the body does not publish year-on-year comparisons for this.

They show that the daily online estimated readership figures were 37,000 for The Courier, 22,000 for the Glasgow Evening Times and 12,000 for the Yorkshire Post.

For The Herald and Sunday Herald combined, the daily digital figures were 48,000 and for the The Scotsman and sister title Scotland on Sunday, the daily online estimated readership was 86,000.

Laughable. You’ve got to question sample sizes and the robustness of the approach when the readership figures differ so wildly from circulation performance. Every study is going to have a margin of error but it’s incredible to think that readership of some titles is increasing despite sales plummeting.

Wonder if Scottish independence would make all Scottish newspapers more or less popular….answers on a postcard.
